Cover letter examples that get read past line one

A cover letter is read in one pass or not at all. These structures survive the pass, with side-by-side rewrites of the lines that kill most letters.

Cover letter examples that get read past line one

Most cover letters die in the first two sentences, because the first two sentences are about the applicant wanting a job. The reader already knows that — they have the application in front of them. What they do not know is whether you understand the role and can prove it.

Structure one: the evidence letter

Best for roles where the advert lists specific requirements. Four paragraphs: role and positioning, two paragraphs of matched evidence, close.

I am applying for the Data Analyst role advertised on your careers site. For the past three years I have built the reporting that operations teams actually use, including the weekly capacity model that replaced a manual spreadsheet process across four sites. The advert asks for SQL, Power BI and stakeholder management. I write production SQL daily, having rebuilt our order-level data model last year; I own six Power BI reports used by around forty staff; and I run a fortnightly review with warehouse managers where those numbers get challenged and changed. One example. Empty-mile running was costing real money on the northern route. I built a route-cost model in SQL, tested three reallocation scenarios with the transport manager, and the adopted version cut that cost by roughly two thirds within two quarters. I did not do that alone — the point is that the analysis was mine and it changed a decision. I would welcome the chance to discuss the role. I can start after a four-week notice period.

Structure two: the graduate letter

Same shape, different evidence. Without employment history, the proof comes from a dissertation, a society, a part-time job or a project. Name the thing and quantify it.

  • Paragraph one: the role, your degree and result, one line of positioning.
  • Paragraph two: a piece of academic work with a specific outcome — what you analysed, what you found.
  • Paragraph three: a second, non-academic example showing the behaviour the advert asks for (teamwork, ownership, customer contact).
  • Paragraph four: availability for interview, and any right-to-work statement the advert requires.

Structure three: the career-change letter

The transition is the question in the reader's mind, so answer it in the second paragraph rather than leaving it to be guessed at. Lead with transferable evidence, then explain the move in a single clause, then the closing paragraph proves you have done something concrete about it.

I am a secondary maths teacher of seven years applying for the Junior Data Analyst role. The transferable part is not the teaching — it is the analysis. I built the assessment tracking model now used across a 900-pupil school and trained twelve staff to use it. Moving into analytics is a deliberate step, not an escape. I completed certificates in SQL and Python over the last eighteen months and rebuilt that tracking model in both, partly to prove to myself that I can work outside a spreadsheet. The work is on my GitHub, including the messy first version. What I do not have is commercial experience, and I would rather say that plainly than imply otherwise. What I have is a habit of building things people use, and a school full of stakeholders who will tell you what they think of my numbers.

Lines to delete on sight

  • "I am writing to apply for the position of..." — spend the line on positioning instead.
  • "I am a hard-working, motivated individual with excellent communication skills."
  • "I have always been passionate about this industry."
  • "Please find my CV attached for your consideration." — that is what attachments are for.
  • "I would be a valuable asset to your organisation." — an assertion, not evidence.

The three-sentence test

After you write a draft, read only the first sentence of each paragraph. If you can reconstruct your argument from those three or four sentences, the letter is doing its job. If they read as filler — greetings, enthusiasm, availability — rewrite them until each carries a claim.

One page, always

There is no market in 2026 where a two-page cover letter is an advantage. If yours does not fit, you have included evidence that belongs in the CV. Move it there and cut the letter.
