What a free ATS resume checker can and cannot tell you

No public tool has access to Workday, Greenhouse or Taleo. That is fine — most of what decides your fate is measurable from the document itself.

What a free ATS resume checker can and cannot tell you

Every free resume checker makes the same implicit promise: upload your CV and we will tell you pass or fail. None of them can. The employer's applicant tracking system sits behind a login, configured for one company, with a parser whose behaviour you cannot inspect. Anything claiming otherwise is guessing and calling it a result.

What a checker can do is test the properties that every parser shares, and show you the evidence. That is a narrower claim, and it is the honest one.

What is genuinely measurable

  • Text extractability — can the PDF or DOCX be converted to text at all, and does the order survive?
  • Section detection — are there recognisable Experience, Education and Skills sections?
  • Contact details — are an email and phone number present as plain text?
  • Date consistency — month-and-year across every role, or an inconsistent mess?
  • Layout risk — columns, tables, text boxes, headers and footers.
  • Keyword overlap with a specific job description you provide.
  • Missing sections the advert implies you should have.
  • Length, bullets per role, and whether bullets contain outcomes or only duties.

What no public checker can tell you

  • Whether you will be rejected — that is a human decision after the software.
  • The employer's exact keyword weighting, if they configure one.
  • Which of your bullets a recruiter will read first.
  • Whether the company even uses an ATS for that role. Small employers often read applications by hand.
  • Your real ranking among other applicants.

How to read a score honestly

A score is a weighted summary of the measurable checks above. It is useful for two things: spotting structural problems you had not noticed, and tracking whether a rewrite improved anything. It is not a prediction.

Treat it like a spell-checker. A document with no spelling mistakes is not necessarily good writing, but a document full of mistakes is reliably bad. Likewise, a resume that scores well is not guaranteed to work, but one that fails the structural checks will struggle regardless of how good the experience is.

A score you cannot interrogate is entertainment. Insist on seeing the breakdown.

Questions to ask any checker

  • Does it show the evidence for each point, or only a number?
  • Does it explain how the score is calculated and what the weights are?
  • Does it store my upload, and for how long?
  • Does it claim to know how a specific ATS vendor will score me? If yes, it is improvising.

The five-minute version

If you skip the tools entirely, do this: open your PDF, select all, paste into a plain text editor. Check the name, contact details, employer names, job titles and dates all appear in a sensible order. Then read the job advert's requirements and make sure the phrases in it appear in your resume where they are genuinely true.

That manual check catches most of what actually goes wrong. A checker just does it faster and with a consistent set of rules.
