Sales and customer-facing resumes: quota, retention and volume

Sales resumes are read for three numbers: did you hit quota, how big were the deals, and how long was the cycle.

What this document has to prove

Sales hiring is the most metric-literate in the market. A hiring manager will look for quota attainment before anything else, and a resume without it reads as a resume without results.

If you are in a support or customer-facing role rather than a quota-carrying one, the equivalent numbers are volume, retention, resolution time and satisfaction scores — and they carry just as much weight when stated properly.

What a recruiter searches for

These are the terms a hiring team filters on. Include the ones that are true of your work — our checker tells you which are missing, it never inserts them for you.

Quota and attainment
Percentage attained, consistent over-attainment, ranking within team.
Deal metrics
Average deal size, ACV, cycle length, pipeline generated.
Customer metrics
Retention, churn, NPS, CSAT, resolution time, ticket volume.
Sales vocabulary
SDR, AE, outbound, inbound, MEDDIC, Salesforce, HubSpot, forecast accuracy.
Segment
SMB, mid-market, enterprise; new business versus account management.
Territory
Region, vertical, named accounts — a common hard filter.

How to write it, section by section

The first line of each role is a number

Lead with segment and quota, then attainment. "Enterprise AE, $1.2m annual quota, 118% attained over two years" is the entire first impression. Everything after it is supporting detail.

  • Scope line: segment, territory, quota, product type.
  • Attainment: percentage and consistency ("112%, 108% and 121% over three years").
  • Deal shape: average deal size, cycle length, largest closed.
  • Pipeline: outbound sourced, forecast accuracy, or whatever the role was actually judged on.

When the quota was not met

Missed quota happens; a hiring manager will ask. Handle it with context rather than omission: a territory that was rebuilt, a product launch that slipped, a market that contracted. One honest line plus evidence of what you changed reads far better than a number quietly left out.

Customer-facing roles without a quota

Support, success and service roles have their own numbers and they matter: tickets per day, first-response time, resolution rate, retention in a book of business, CSAT. State the volume and the outcome, not the tool you used to log it.

  • Weak: "Provided excellent customer service."
  • Better: "Handled around 70 customer contacts a day across chat and email."
  • Best: "Handled around 70 contacts a day across chat and email; rewrote the returns policy guidance and cut repeat contacts on that topic by a measurable margin."

US resume vs UK CV

US: Letter, one page, numbers prominent, no photo. UK: A4, two pages, personal statement, British spelling — organisation, prioritise, programme.

US adverts often specify OTE and segment; mirror their terminology. UK adverts often specify the sector and territory, so name yours.

Moving from support into sales

Customer support is one of the best pipelines into sales because you already know the objections. Rebuild the resume around the commercial moments: the upsell you spotted, the churn you saved, the account you grew. Quantify them, and put the customer-facing volume directly beside them.

Mistakes that end the first read

Each of these is common in this role specifically, and each one costs a real application.

  • No quota or attainment figure anywhere on the page.
  • Percentage claims with no base ("grew sales by 400%" from what?).
  • Listing tools (Salesforce, HubSpot) with no sales outcome attached.
  • Hiding a missed year instead of explaining it in one honest line.
  • Describing relationships instead of revenue, retention or volume.
  • A customer-service resume with no volume or resolution metrics.

Questions people ask

What if my quota attainment was below 100%?
State it with context and show what you changed. A hiring manager will respect an honest 92% with a clear explanation more than a vague claim of success.
Should I include OTE or commission structure?
On the resume, include the quota and attainment rather than your earnings. Earnings belong in the conversation, not the document.
How do I show sales success from a non-sales role?
Find the commercial moments: revenue you protected, churn you prevented, accounts you grew. Quantify them and place them next to the customer-facing volume.
One page or two?
US: one page for most individual-contributor sales roles. UK: two pages is normal, especially with several roles to document.
