Teacher resume and UK teacher CV: phase, subject and impact

What this document has to prove

Teaching applications are unusual in how formal the process is: a person specification, a scored shortlisting, and often a lesson observation. The CV or application form is read against those criteria, not as a free-form document.

The mistake candidates make is describing activity — "planned and delivered lessons" — instead of impact, which is what the scorer is looking for.

What a recruiter searches for

These are the terms a hiring team filters on. Include the ones that are true of your work — our checker tells you which are missing, it never inserts them for you.

How to write it, section by section

Header: phase, subject, qualification

Three facts in the first three lines: what phase you teach, what subject, and your qualification status. In the UK, QTS status is the first thing a panel checks; in the US, state certification and endorsements do the same job.

Evidence of pupil impact

Every teacher plans lessons; the scorer already assumes that. What distinguishes a strong application is evidence that pupils learned more because you were there — with the honest caveat that cohort factors matter.

  • Weak: "Planned and delivered engaging lessons across Key Stage 3 and 4."
  • Better: "Taught mathematics across Key Stage 3 and 4, including a Year 11 group of 28."
  • Best: "Taught mathematics to a Year 11 group of 28; introduced weekly low-stakes assessment and targeted intervention, and the group's progress moved from below to in line with the department average."
  • Whole-school contribution: "Led the department's assessment tracker redesign, now used by five staff across three year groups."

Answer the person specification

Copy the essential criteria into a scratch document and write one line of evidence against each. If a criterion has no evidence, that is a genuine gap — either find the closest true experience or accept that this application is a stretch.

In the UK this evidence usually goes in the supporting statement rather than the CV; the CV still needs to be consistent with it.

Career changers into teaching

Your previous career is an asset in the classroom and a credibility signal for the panel. Keep it on the page but compress it: one scope line, two outcome bullets, then move on to your training year, which is what the panel is assessing.

US resume vs UK CV

US: Letter, one page for early career, certification and endorsements prominent, no photo. UK: A4, two pages, personal statement first, QTS and DBS status stated, British spelling (organise, behaviour, programme).

In the US, teaching resumes often include a short "professional development" line; in the UK, CPD belongs in the supporting statement or the education section.

Mistakes that end the first read

Each of these is common in this role specifically, and each one costs a real application.

  • No phase or subject in the header — the first filter a panel applies.
  • Listing duties instead of pupil outcomes.
  • Omitting safeguarding training and DBS or background check status in the UK.
  • A US-style resume sent to a UK panel with no personal statement and US spelling.
  • Hiding previous careers instead of compressing them into credibility.
  • Claims of results with no context about the cohort.

Questions people ask

Should QTS be on my CV?
Yes, in the header or a dedicated qualification line, with the date and route (PGCE, BEd, assessment only). It is the first thing a UK panel checks.
How long should a teacher CV be?
Two pages in the UK, which is standard and leaves room for the person specification. One page in the US for early career, two with additional responsibilities.
How do I show impact without exam data?
Use assessment data you do have, intervention outcomes, or a change in a specific group's trajectory. Say what the measure was; a panel will accept a modest, well-explained result over a vague claim.
Does a career change hurt my application?
Handled well, it helps. Compress the previous career into two or three lines that show transferable credibility, and give the panel the space to assess your training year and classroom evidence.
