Accountant resume: qualifications, systems and the close

Accounting recruitment filters on qualification status and systems first. Get those two lines right and the rest of the page gets read.

Job titles this covers

Quill
  • Accountant
  • Management Accountant
  • Financial Accountant
  • Finance Manager

Compact typography with clear rules; keeps a long systems and qualifications block tidy on one or two pages.

  • Starts from the recommended template
  • Section order matches this role

What this document has to prove

Finance hiring is credential-led. Whether you are part-qualified, newly qualified or finalist changes which roles you are considered for, so it belongs in the first three lines — not in a footnote under education.

The second filter is systems. Sage, Xero, QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, Oracle: recruiters search by name, and a resume that says "accounting software" instead of the product loses the match.

What a recruiter searches for

These are the terms a hiring team filters on. Include the ones that are true of your work — our checker tells you which are missing, it never inserts them for you.

Qualification status
ACCA, ACA, CIMA, CPA, AAT, and exactly where you are in the process (part-qualified, finalist, newly qualified).
Systems by name
Sage, Xero, QuickBooks, NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, Workday Financials.
Core processes
Month-end close, management accounts, statutory accounts, VAT returns, payroll, reconciliations, fixed assets.
Compliance vocabulary
GAAP, IFRS, FRS 102, SOX, audit, internal controls, corporation tax.
Scale
Entities consolidated, transaction volume, ledger size, team size.
Outcome words
Reduced close time, recovered costs, cleared backlog, passed audit with no findings.

How to write it, section by section

The header carries your qualification status

One line: qualification body, level, and expected completion date if you are still studying. In the UK this might read "ACCA part-qualified (9 of 13 exams passed, remaining papers scheduled 2027)". In the US, "CPA candidate, 2 of 4 sections passed" does the same job.

Do not write "ACCA qualified" unless you are. Verification is trivial and the correction is fatal to your application.

Bullets that show finance, not bookkeeping

Accounting resumes drift towards process lists. The differentiator is what your work changed: time saved at close, errors eliminated, costs recovered, audit findings avoided.

  • Weak: "Responsible for month-end close and reconciliations."
  • Stronger: "Owned the month-end close for two entities, including reconciliations, accruals and variance analysis."
  • Best: "Owned the month-end close for two entities; rebuilt the reconciliation checklist and cut close from nine working days to six."
  • Audit and controls: "Prepared the audit file for a £40m turnover subsidiary; the audit produced no adjustments."
  • Process: "Automated the fixed-asset register in NetSuite, removing a manual spreadsheet from the monthly cycle."

US resume vs UK CV conventions

US: Letter, one page for early career, no photo, no date of birth, "CPA" prominent if held. UK: A4, two pages, a short personal statement, British spelling (organisation, analyse), AAT/ACCA/CIMA prominently placed.

UK readers expect to see the qualification with grades or exam progress. US readers expect the CPA licence and, for industry roles, the systems list.

Career gaps and returns

A gap in a finance career is common — parental leave, study, a different sector. One neutral line with dates is enough. If you kept your CPD current or returned via a contract role, say so; that is the question behind the question.

Industry versus practice

Moving from practice to industry, or the reverse, is a vocabulary problem more than a skills problem. Audit experience maps to controls and reporting quality; industry experience maps to process ownership and business partnering. Describe your work in the target vocabulary, accurately, and the transition reads as a choice rather than a gap.

Mistakes that end the first read

Each of these is common in this role specifically, and each one costs a real application.

  • Claiming a qualification you have not completed.
  • Writing "accounting software" instead of naming the system.
  • Burying exam progress below education and hobbies.
  • Process-only bullets with no outcome, no scale and no system.
  • Missing the compliance framework you actually worked under (IFRS, FRS 102, GAAP, SOX).
  • A US resume with a photo or date of birth, or a UK CV with US spelling throughout.

Questions people ask

How should I show part-qualified status?
State the body, the exams passed and the expected completion date. "ACCA part-qualified, 9 of 13 papers, remaining papers scheduled 2027" is unambiguous and standard.
Is a one-page resume enough for accounting?
In the US, yes for early career. In the UK, two pages is normal and expected because qualification detail takes space.
Should I list every system I have used?
List the ones you can operate independently and the ones the advert asks for. A long list invites a practical test you may not want.
How do I show impact when my role was compliance-driven?
Use compliance outcomes: no audit adjustments, cleared backlogs, reduced close time, eliminated manual steps. Those are measurable and they matter.
